Coffee in Chiang Mai

One of the reasons coffee prices have been skyrocketing lately: coffee is becoming increasingly popular across Asia. The coffee you get in Chiang Mai’s cafés often comes from plantations north of the city. For example, if you head up to Wat Suthep and continue driving for another 30 minutes, you’ll find yourself in a mountainous area full of plantations. In the nearby village, you’ll come across a dozen coffee shops serving locally grown and roasted coffee.

This map with all the pinned coffee spots in Chiang Mai may be a parody — but there’s truth to it: the city now boasts dozens of cafés. Below is a small selection of our favorites. The equipment is usually excellent, but of course the quality of your coffee still depends on the barista making it.

Want to experience how deeply coffee culture is woven into the city? Spend an hour hanging out at Brewginning on Chang Moi Road. Throughout the day, groups of young Thais stop by to snap Instagram photos with the coffee shop (or the rattan shop across the street) in the background.

Super handy: create your own list of favorite items

On every photo on this site, you’ll see a little heart icon in the top right corner. Click on it, and we’ll add that block of info to your favorites basket. (Click it again to remove the item from your favorites.)

Once you’ve added at least one item, a large heart will appear in the top right corner of the page, showing the number of items you’ve already added. Kind of like a shopping cart in a webshop — but in this case, it’s a big heart. Click on it, and you’ll be taken to a page with all your selected favorites. You’ll also have the option to email that list to yourself, so you’ll always have it handy.
