Chiang Mai has a modest yet vibrant gay scene. Don’t expect an expansive gay district packed with large clubs; instead, gay life is spread across various locations throughout the city—from casual bars near the Night Bazaar to modern nightlife venues in Nimman.If you’re looking to meet other gay men without immediately ending up in a show bar or an overtly erotic setting, a good place to start is around the Night Bazaar. In the vicinity of Charoenprathet Soi 6, you’ll find several small bars where you can grab a drink, play a game of pool, and easily strike up a conversation. Orion Bar and the smaller Charm Bar are well-known spots in this area. Chiang Mai 19 Bar is also worth checking out and tends to attract a more mixed crowd.
Prefer a more contemporary nightlife vibe? Then Nimman—with its array of cafés, bars, and international clientele—is an interesting neighborhood to explore. Not every great hangout spot is exclusively for gay visitors, and that is precisely what makes the social scene in Chiang Mai so relaxed.
